| During the Spring General Meeting, a new president and board of directors
was elected. We will have new faces and new ideas to helping to move the
Maryland Printmakers into the turn of the century. Therefore, I would like
to take this opportunity to address the incredible job that our past president,
Richard Hellman, had done in two short years. He came to the board two years
ago after having served as membership chair in the early 1990's. Richard
was elected into the presidency during a time when the Maryland Printmakers
was in a state of flux. There were a lot of changes taking place on the board
and among the committees, and a re-evaluation of the direction the Printmakers
would take was on the table. With determination and a lot of personal phone
calls, Richard and the membership were able to pull together and jump-start
the organization to a fully functional group. His appeals to the membership,
although sparse at first, resulted in a response from the members who have
taken an active role in the organization. We now have many members working
on many different committees. The hard work has paid off. The volunteer efforts
of so many of the members had brought a new light to the group and it is
working. The help from everyone individually has increased the strength of
the Maryland Printmakers significantly. Increased effort on exhibition has
brought in numerous events. Our focus on education in previous years has
developed an education program that continues to grow. With the help of
individual members to organize workshops and demonstrations, the education
program can continue to grow. And finally, Internet access has been established
and is successfully being managed with the very generous contribution of
time and space made by Mary and Matt Laur.
All in all, the Maryland Printmakers is moving into the 21st century with
a bang. It is becoming clear that with a little help from everyone, the benefits
for the group exceed the imput. Support of the members has been crucial for
our successes and is crucial for our future. Let's keep up the good work.
