On February 22, 1998, S. Donovan Swann Jr. died of heart failure at his Charles
Village residence. He was 87 years old. Those of us that have been around
for a number of years may recall his father Don Swann Sr., who died in 1954.
Don Swann was known as Maryland's leading etcher in those days. Mr. S. Donovan
Swann Jr. worked with his father in 1939 to produce "Colonial and Historical
Homes of Maryland," a volume of etchings of the state's historic homes. The
book, reissued by Johns Hopkins Press in 1975, has an introduction by F.
Scott Fitzgerald.
Mr. Swann also reorganized his father's Etchcrafters Guild Inc. in 1965 and
reissued historical etchings by his father, which he later sold at art galleries,
flowermarts, book fairs and shopping malls.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Kay Sultley, several stepchildren,
a sister, and two nieces.
